General Information
Appleby-in-Westmorland in the Eden District of Cumbria, England. Appleby Archaeology was formed in early 1998 with the aim of encouraging local interest in practical field archaeology.
What do they do?
- Regularly meet each month during the winter to hear lectures on subjects of general archaeological interest - Lectures are held in the Supper Room of Appleby's Market Hall on the second Thursday of the month from October through to April. They start at 7.30 
- During the summer, visits to local sites - No experience is required in order to become involved as are able to provide all necessary training 
- Produce a quarterly newsletter and keep members informed about opportunities to get involved in local archaeology 
- Membership includes professional archaeologist that over the years have surveyed and dug at numerous locations in the Appleby area - in particular on Brackenber Moor which preserves a wide range of prehistoric features. 
- Recently were fortunate to be awarded a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to involve the Appleby Community in a wide-ranging project to research the early history of the town 
Costs?
Membership of Appleby Archaeology for the current subscription year (2022) costs £15.00 for sole membership yearly
